Annotation | "Staying in control of one's life" is a key priority for older people, coupled with dignity, choice, autonomy and the opportunity to lead an ordinary life. However, the right to autonomy and self-determination can sometimes be overridden by other people's concerns, fears and priorities. Discussions about decision-making and autonomy more usually take place in relation to those with learning disabilities, mental ill health, or cognitive impairment. This seminar focused on older people in general who may face a crisis in their lives due to illness, accident or bereavement, or because they find it progressively harder to look after themselves. The seminar discussed the legal and professional frameworks for decision-making, in circumstances where older people are competent to take their own decisions. (RH). |
