AnnotationThe Taskforce was set up by the Ageing Population Panel, to look at the impact of the projected increasing population of older people on labour, leisure and learning activities. Key findings are identified for each, along with the opportunities, threats and challenges each presents. For labour, opportunities for UK business, the demographic impact of the workforce, the future of retirement age, changing patterns of work, and a rejection of "downsizing" are identified. These factors have implications for the the future employment market and how businesses will react. On leisure, older people as consumers with more time for leisure will create a "demand society"; scope for the leisure industries is identified. To support changing lifestyles, people will continue with learning throughout their lives, whether reskilling for their work, for leisure, or for learning for its own sake as a positive pursuit. The closing date for comments on this discussion paper and on the main consultation document, "The age shift" is 15 September 2000. (RH).
