AnnotationActive lifestyles are associated with better health and lower rates of mortality from all causes. This review presents evidence that physical activity can contribute to health and well-being in old age. In particular, it explores whether increases in physical activity can reduce the risk of developing the following chronic diseases: cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease, hyperlipidaemia, stroke, and hypertension); metabolic diseases (diabetes mellitus and obesity); skeletal diseases (osteoporosis and osteoarthritis); respiratory disease; cancer; and incontinence. It also explores the prescribing of exercise, and exercise as part of rehabilitation. For many of the conditions considered, active lifestyles reduce disease incidence. The earlier active lifestyles are established the better; but increasing activity levels - even late in life - is also beneficial for reducing morbidity and mortality, and for ameliorating symptoms.
