AnnotationThe purpose of the Joint Review is to provide an objective assessment of how well the people of Birmingham are being served by their social services. The review considers how services are arranged for individual people; how the care needs of the population are planned for; and how well available resources are being used. Users' and carers' views were also sought. While the Review found inconsistency in service provision, the report cites examples of innovative policies in services for older people: a new homes for old (NHFO) policy; consultation with residents and their families; specialist dementia care; extra care sheltered housing (ECSH); home care; effective rehabilitation; and hospital discharge. Policies are also being developed to re-focus older people's services away from institutional care to those reinforcing independence and prevention through multidisciplinary working. Priorities for action overall relate to management, business planning, and making services more consistent. (RH).
