Annotation | Despite the wishes of registered social landlords (RSLs) to help in tackling social exclusion, regeneration planning is failing vulnerable people with community care needs. The author reports on the findings of a major national study carried out with the Nuffield Institute for Health, "Social inclusion for vulnerable people linking regeneration and community care: the housing, care and support dimensions". There were some good one-off initiatives, such as the Liverpool Housing Action Trust, and the Roundshaw Estate in Sutton. In the main, though, few areas had any strategic approach to linking the housing aspects of community care into regeneration planning. The research points to inflexibilities in funding sources and rules for local authorities, which make for difficulties in including supported housing in regeneration areas. (RH). |
