AnnotationThere is contradictory evidence in the Netherlands regarding trends toward age integration. Increasingly, older people are found taking courses at university, working alongside younger people in the "grey sector" (i.e. the black economy), where paying taxes is avoided, and volunteering in age-integrated settings. In contrast, in the mainstream economy, people may be defined as "old" by the age of 45, and mandatory retirement by the age of 65 is the norm. This is one of a series of eleven essays originally presented at sessions on age integration at both the International Sociological Association meeting in Montreal and the American Sociological Association meeting in San Francisco in 1998, and also adapted from a working paper issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) in May 1999. (RH).
