AnnotationBased on research in three-generation families in France, the author explores ways in which economic and social exchanges between generations work to reduce inequality and differences across age strata. Each of the three generations in her research represents a relatively homogeneous age grouping, clearly differentiated in respect of historical background and current stage in the life course. Results demonstrate: the importance of financial gifts and other transfers; a reduction of generational differences through social and cultural exchanges within families; the diffusion of social change from the youngest adults to the oldest; and an increase in upward social mobility. This is one of a series of eleven essays originally presented at sessions on age integration at both the International Sociological Association meeting in Montreal and the American Sociological Association meeting in San Francisco in 1998, and also adapted from a working paper issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) in May 1999.
