AnnotationDementia studies have been dominated by biomedical and psychological models that focus on the individual without regard to any socio-cultural context. This literature review examines the growing interest in the socio-cultural context of dementia with reference to earlier developments in disability studies and ageing research in general. Not all cultures view dementia as a disease. Some consider it as a normal part of ageing, while for others it is an abnormal condition brought about by a range of causes. The cultural context of care is examined, including the literature on "burden". The author makes a plea for more longitudinal, comparative and intra-cultural research. This would provide us with more detail about the similarities and differences of living with or caring for someone with dementia. (RH).
