AnnotationThere is a need for a standardised instrument to screen for depression in nursing homes which incorporates daily observations of nursing staff. The authors conducted semi-structured interviews with 108 residents from two nursing homes in the US and Canada to obtain depression ratings using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. Nursing staff completed Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments. In a randomly assigned derivation sample, the authors identified MDS mood items that were correlated with Hamilton and Cornell ratings. Performance of the MDS compared favourably with the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) when tested against psychiatric diagnoses. Further testing of the MDS is now required. (RH).
