AnnotationThe consultation document "Shaping the future NHS" publishes the findings of the National Beds Inquiry, and outlines options relating to the Department of Health's (DoH) plans "to shape work to modernise the whole of health and social care services". Age Concern England (ACE) supports the document's underlying philosophy that the focus for future health care development should be based on the needs of older people, who are the major users of services. However, ACE calls for clarification of proposals on intermediate care, relating to the transfer from free NHS care to charged or paid for local authority care. While the consultation document refers to the need to expand social care, it does not indicate how this will be done nor whether additional funding will support such change. ACE calls for more consumer involvement, whereby older people and representative organisations can be better informed and able to make their views known on service provision. (RH).
