Annotation | This paper provides a summary of the various definitions and procedures used in the registration of births and deaths in the United Kingdom. It is based on information supplied by the three offices handling vital registration data: the Office for National Statistics (ONS) (for England and Wales); the General Register Office (Scotland); and the General Register Office (Northern Ireland). A brief commentary is given on some differences in practice between the three areas, which often arise from their differing legal and administrative environments. (RH). |
