Are we looking forward to a longer and healthier retirement? | Author(s) | Karen Dunnell, David Dix |
Journal title | Health Statistics Quarterly, 06, Summer 2000 |
Pages | pp 18-25 |
Keywords | Health [elderly] ; Middle aged ; Living patterns ; Life expectancy tables ; Statistics [data]. |
Annotation | The General Household Survey (GHS) has regularly included sections on health and health related behaviour. This article uses the GHS and other Office for National Statistics (ONS) sources to review trends in health among people aged 55-64, an age group that is experiencing rapidly decreasing death rates leading to a greater expectation of life and longer retirement. But are 55-64 year olds more healthy, and will their extra years be increasingly free of chronic illness and disability? A range of indicators are reviewed for mortality, morbidity, health services use and patterns of health related behaviour in this pre-retirement age group to examine their future health prospects. Preliminary results from recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) work on healthy life expectancy indicate that the retiring population can expect its healthy life expectancy to increase, but not by as much as total life expectancy.
