AnnotationThe State Hospital for Scotland and Northern Ireland ("Carstairs") provides a service to mentally disordered offenders who may be dangerous and to people who are very difficult to manage in local psychiatric services because of their behaviour. The main patient group is young or middle-aged men (aged 25-50), many of whom have committed serious offences. This review reports on the quality of services provided. (RH).
