AnnotationThis report examines the palliative care needs of adults with existing severe mental health problems who require palliative care, and those of adults with dementia. The aims of the report are to raise awareness in both the palliative care and mental health fields of the needs of these patients. Recommendations related to palliative care needs of persons with severe mental illness include the following: hospices and palliative care services should ensure that staff are familiar with the major mental illnesses and are aware of the needs of these patients; staff education programmes should include sessions on attitudes towards people with mental health problems; and long-stay psychiatric units and high security hospitals should appoint palliative care link nurses. Recommendations related to persons with dementia include: GPs should be educated in the palliative care approach; initiatives across England, Wales and Scotland aimed at improving care for the dying in nursing homes should be evaluated and widely disseminated; local care of the elderly and palliative care services should develop joint training programmes for staff; services should challenge through education the attitudes of staff to older people and ensure than care is provided on the basis of need, not age.
