AnnotationWhile prolonging healthy life and preventing disabling diseases are desirable, older people themselves need to recognise that there is scope to improve their health. The author focuses on the growth of health prevention in general and the development of the Beth Johnson Foundation's Self Health Care in Old Age Project in particular. She argues that although self health care is crucial to the maintenance of health and well-being throughout life, it has been neglected when considering later life. The Project is evaluated using action research methodology. Self health care in action is examined from the point of view of older people, with reference to participation, accessibility, informed choice, skills development, and empowerment. Its impact on volunteers and staff involvement is examined. A final chapter looks at lessons learned, and the role of self health care in future policy and practice. (RH).
