Annotation | Diabetes is a serious disease which affects 3% of the population, and accounts for significant and rising costs to the NHS. Services are often poorly co-ordinated, and many may not meet the needs of different patient groups. There is good evidence as to what treatment is effective to help individuals to manage the disease and live their lives to the full. This report reviews the state of current services, using detailed evidence from the health service and from a large survey of people with diabetes. The study concludes that primary care, supported by specialist diabetes teams are likely to be the most effective way of coping with increased demands and enhancing current services. Evidence from this report will help to inform the National Service Framework (NSF) on diabetes to be published in Spring 2001. (RH). |
