AnnotationHome care services for older people from minority ethnic groups are widely recognised as being inadequate. This study examined the views of older South Asian people in Scotland about their support needs, in the context of a review of existing service provision. A total of 102 South Asian older people were interviewed, of whom 30 were followed up for more in-depth interviews. Findings showed that the majority of the participants lived with their children or in an extended family. On the whole, use of domiciliary services was limited. Carers interviewed expressed needs for access to services, including adaptations to the house, community groups, benefits and housing advice, and help in the home. Voluntary sector services were highly valued, however, service provision was patchy and funding insecure. By contrast, mainstream services were little used by the participants, and were often inaccessible to them. (AKM).
