AnnotationOver the past 30 years death, and the care of people who are dying, have increasingly become subjects of public discussion. However, the debate has mainly focused on terminal care from the perspective of the care providers, rather than focusing on the circumstances and experiences of people who are facing death. This book explores the impact of demographic and policy changes on the situation of people who die, focusing on the period between 1969 and 1987, the dates of two British research studies which are the focus of the book. In part one, the experience of illness, death and bereavement is explored, focusing on communication and awareness, religious belief, caring, social class differences, and older age. The second part examines people's experiences of the care they receive in the year before death, covering hospices, hospitals, residential and nursing homes, and day centres. Part three considers the views of the health care professionals who participated in the surveys, concerning issues of care in the community. In addition, the role of general practitioners (GPs), community nurses, and the experiences of these services by dying people, their relatives and friends is considered. Finally, relationships and communication between different professionals involved in the care of dying people is examined. (AKM).
