Annotation | This project was carried out at the request of the European Commission within the framework of the Equal Opportunities Programme. It sets out to present a general and comprehensive picture of the position of older women (defined here as those over the age of fifty), with particular reference to employment issues. The report also considers wider issues such as health, housing, and education. The principle objectives were: to review the literature and data sources; to make comparisons where possible between member states; and to recommend new initiatives to help older women to improve their position. The report concludes that, compared to men of the same age, older women living in Europe are disadvantaged, in that their opportunities for employment are more limited and they are financially less secure. It is likely that older women in the future will have differing experiences and problems. The authors suggest that their situation will need to be monitored and action taken to prevent older women from suffering the same disadvantages. (RH). |
