AnnotationThe objective of this study is to explore some theoretical and methodological problems relative to the social construction of older people's image and identity, as theorised within sociolinguistics and ethnomethodology. Extracts from conversations with older women at seniors' centres in Perugia, Italy, are examined using a careful and detailed discourse analysis. The study is concerned with describing how the image of older people is produced socially, through discourse and social practices. It demonstrates that identity is connected to defining one's own field of action, that is, one's own life perspective. (RH).
