AnnotationThe Continuing Education Unit (CEU) at Thames Polytechnic, where this study was carried out, had as a concern the opening up the Polytechnic's resources to students without formal qualifications and without paid work. This FEU REPLAN project focuses on three issues of particular concern: older unemployed adults; the assessment and use of prior learning; and transitions or changes in life roles. The report concentrates on the experiences of older unemployed people and the educational provision developed in response through outreach work. An account of the creation of a "Guides to Greenwich" tourist guide course outlines the setting up of an examining board (including education and training providers) to endorse accreditation compatible with other awards, and including appropriate methods of assessment and evaluation. The report discusses the cultural and economic problems of transition from paid work to unemployment to education, and how education can best prepare people for the transition to paid work. (RH).
