Annotation | This document is published as part of the "Listening to Older People" events. These were 11 UK-wide events held during 1999 in which older people were invited to give their opinions and suggestions about the potential for improvements to their lives. The document details what older people said they wanted from Government; what the Government has already done and what it will do in the future - thereby it is the current Government's policy document on older people with a foreword by the Prime Minister, Tony Blair and an introduction by the Secretary of State for Social Security, the Rt. Hon Alistair Darling MP. The policy areas covered in the document are: lifelong learning and leisure; work and volunteering; social care and carers; security; health, income and transport. The issues raised by older people connected to each policy are summarised, followed by how the Government has responded and future action. Further measures to be taken right across Government policies and services are also outlined, and these focus on dealing with media images of older people and tackling age discrimination in the workplace. A newsletter style report accompanies this document. A third publication connected to this initiative is the independent report produced by Warwick University, "Building a better society for older people - report on the listening events to the Inter-Ministerial Group for Older People. This includes a report on each of the regional listening events. (KJ) (AKM) |
