AnnotationUntil now, there has been a lack of adequate measures for defining needs in older people with mental health problems. This paper describes the development of a new instrument intended to fill the gap comprehensively. The Camberwell Assessment of Need for the Elderly (CANE) comprises 224 items (plus two items for carer needs), and records staff, carer and patient views. Its psychometric properties seem to be highly acceptable, with ease of use by a wide range of professionals without formal training. (RH).
