Annotation | Researchers have sought to understand what determines use of in-home and community-based services to better serve older people's needs. One component frequently included in models of formal service use is the role of those who influence the service use process. In an analysis of in-depth interviews conducted with 115 older people (including whites and African Americans) from rural and urban areas, most revealed the important facilitating role of physicians and religious leaders in encouraging use of these services. Their ways of influencing included: instrumental support by "ordering" or linking an older person with a service; or providing information, including advising or recommending use of a service.
