AnnotationIn health care, collaboration is significant because involvement of clients allows them to take more control of their health care problems and thus improve their outcomes. When a collaborative approach is used in therapy, clients understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and feel encouraged to engage in the process. This study aimed to determine whether and how collaboration occurs in the therapeutic relationship from the perspective of older clients receiving occupational therapy (OT) services. Semi-structured interviews were held with six older people in long-term residential care. Results indicated that three levels of collaboration emerged during the collaborative process, with the client setting the initial tone for collaboration. In order to establish an effective collaborative process, therapists need to be aware of the signals their clients send. (RH).
