AnnotationThis article focuses on elder abuse in rural Canada, giving statistical data and information about rural living, the ageing population, the existing services and family networks, health and lifestyles of its inhabitants. It discusses the types of abuse occurring in rural communities and how the remote, rural character of living arrangements can hide abuse being perpetrated. The research shows that four areas need to be addressed to provide more help in rural communities: availability of services, accessible services, attitudes within the communities, and awareness of services. Other barriers that need to be overcome include lack of telephone access and language differences between service providers and the rural inhabitants. However, rural communities are beginning to address the abuse of seniors as "community response networks (CRNs)" are developing and working closely together. (KJ).
