Waiting to be heard - dementia and the gay community | Author(s) | Richard Ward |
Journal title | Journal of Dementia Care, vol 8, no 3, May/June 2000 |
Pages | pp 24-25 |
Keywords | Dementia ; Sexual orientation ; Informal care ; Personal relationships ; Needs [elderly]. |
Annotation | The views and experiences of lesbians and gay men with dementia and their carers are largely unrecognised, and it seems no one is taking responsibility either for investigating or meeting their needs. Many of them do not have a "traditional" family network to draw upon, and many are concerned that revealing their sexuality will lead to discrimination and stigmatisation. The author, who has been investigating communication and the provision of care to people with dementia with Jewish Care, reports the experiences of gay men with dementia and their care needs. (RH). |
