Undiminished possibility: the arts in dementia care | Author(s) | Kate Allan, John Killick |
Journal title | Journal of Dementia Care, vol 8, no 3, May/June 2000 |
Pages | pp 16-18 |
Keywords | Cultural activities ; Therapy ; Dementia. |
Annotation | In the last of three articles, the authors discuss issues arising from the growing range of exciting and creative work now being undertaken using the arts in dementia care. The increased use of arts activities for people with dementia fits in with issues around personhood, dignity and communication. The arts can also offer self-expression, practical activity, and aesthetic intent. The article discusses arts activity as therapy, which leads the authors to ask whether it should be therapists or untrained staff carrying out such work. The authors conclude that whatever the difficulties in provision, the arts should be a core component in dementia care. (RH). |
