Annotation | There are few large-scale studies in the UK of the prevalence of drug misuse in older people. The issue is confounded by variations in definition of what constitutes 'drug misuse', with much of the information extrapolated from American findings. The available information can be organised into four main areas: use of illicit drugs; use of prescribed medication; polypharmacy and over the counter medication; and tobacco. The article then goes on to describe correlates, risk factors and co-morbidity. Treatment interventions are described. The authors conclude that older substance misusers deserve better services.
