Annotation | In October 1988, a series of 24 concerts was given by professional musicians to older patients with dementia in Avon and Western Wiltshire, and organised by the Council for Music in Hospitals (CMH). The authors report on two forms of evaluation used to determine the effect of performances on patient well-being: direct observation of patients; and staff ratings of musicians' performance and patients' responses during the live events. While such performances cannot be described as formal therapy, the effect of listening to and participating in the concerts was therapeutic, and levels of increased well-being were observed. (RH). |
