AnnotationThe British Psychological Society (BPS) estimates that only 6% of qualifying clinical psychologists will work with older people. The experiences of trainees to the profession in work placements has been associated with a lower expectation of choosing to work with older people. The authors sought views of trainees on older adult placements from courses at Teesside and Newcastle (covered by the Northern Branch of PSIGE). In a list of factors factor contributing to a good experience, most frequently mentioned is the clients themselves. Of factors contributing to a negative experience, most frequently mentioned was medical model dominance. Comments were used to form quality standards, which could be used to audit and improve placements, and in considering recruitment into the specialty. (RH).
