Annotation | It can often appear that a voluntary organisation has become a de facto arm of a statutory agency, sacrificing its independence to maintain its funding, but at times in danger of losing much of its value to the community. If financing is only available to perform functions at the behest of funders, what becomes of voluntary organisations' traditional roles of campaigning, innovation, advocacy, and supporting those who fall outside the net of statutory provision? Most of the chapters in this book are based on papers presented at a regional Debate of the Age conference at Highbury College, Portsmouth, in September 1998, and supported by Age Concern Portsmouth. The papers consider a range of issues on funding, partnership systems and processes, from not-for-profit, commercial, social services, health services, and voluntary sector perspectives. (RH). |
