AnnotationThis conference was held as a follow-up to an international conference organised by the New Humanity Movement in Rimini, Italy in 1997 in preparation for the United Nations International Year of Older Persons in 1999 (IYOP). This had looked at the situation of the older person from a global perspective, and offered positive experiences of good practice. The present conference considered the British situation. At the end of the conference, proposals for IYOP 1999 from the Rimini conference and recommendations for putting them into practice were presented. These concerned: distribution of human, economic and natural resources; relations between generations and cultures: a global perspective; the dignity of the person at every age: ethics for the quality of life; a new concept of health: the idea of a "healthy environment"; an environment for all: between functionality and aesthetics; getting educated for old age: a culture based on relationships; how to communicate old age: ways of sharing; and a communitarian way of planning and implementing a society for all ages.
