AnnotationThe research for this edition was undertaken by Gilmour Research. Names of funeral directors were chosen at random from the Internet-based Yellow Pages, to replicate how ordinary people might find this information. Interviewers used the "mystery shopper" technique: all funeral directors were asked the cost of a basic funeral with burial, followed by probing questions to test the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the response. The average burial now costs £2,040, and a cremation £1,215. Leverton Brothers have also supplied information on the cost of funerals 100 years ago. In publishing these findings, the Oddfellows aim to encourage people to make financial provision in advance, and to use this survey and checklist to get the funeral they want, at an affordable price.
