AnnotationGood nutrition is undoubtedly central to optimum health and to recovery from illness; yet research and clinical surveys repeatedly demonstrate an unacceptably high incidence of malnutrition in hospital patients in whom it delays recovery and increases the risk of mortality. This discussion emphasises the importance of nutrition in determining not only well-being, but also patients' responses to treatment and the costs of hospital care. It also stresses the centrality of nutritional care, demonstrating its importance in promoting the recovery of health. Preventing and treating malnutrition requires collaboration between health and care practitioners, and would significantly enhance the effectiveness of care and treatment. (RH).
