Annotation | The London Regional Office of the NHS Executive commissioned the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) to produce this review to contribute to the development of London's health strategy. The review aimed to identify key issues to be considered in developing a strategy for improving the health of older Londoners; and to summarise recent evidence on the epidemiology of disease and disability in later life. Policy goals are the prevention of ill-health and disability in later life, and the preservation of independence. The specific needs of ethnic minority groups are also considered. The authors review evidence on the effectiveness of different interventions aimed at preventing or postponing ill-health and disability in later life, and they discuss policy options for service providers. The review relies almost entirely on published literature identified through Medline and AgeInfo; most of the information comes from research reports in scientific journals. Nearly all the evaluation studies cited are randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Thus, the aim was to gather the most robust findings from those evaluations which used the most rigorous methodology.
