AnnotationSome Australian studies have found that analgesic and psychotropic drugs are among the commonly used medications in older people. This study investigated the profile of analgesic and psychotropic medication use in two groups of community-dwelling older people with chronic pain of non-malignant origin. The overall use prevalence of the medications was similar in the two groups. However, significant differences in use prevalence of subcategories of medications were found between the two groups. Those with neurological and non-musculoskeletal conditions as the main cause of pain were more likely to use narcotics and antidepressants, while those with musculoskeletal pain were more likely to use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
