Annotation | This brief article outlines the current position of those suffering from dementia in the London boroughs. There are an estimated 75,000 people with various types of dementia living in London. Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for 55% of the total, with those over 80 being particularly affected (one in five of this age group). There are currently around a thousand establishments within London that accommodate those with dementia, but only a third claim to offer any specialist care for such people. Additionally, the rising number of older people with dementia from minority ethnic groups will also have implications for the provision of appropriate care services. This Bulletin is compiled for local and health authority staff only, and therefore has a closed circulation. (KJ / RH). |
