AnnotationThis study compared patterns of labour force participation among black, white and Hispanic men and women nearing retirement age, drawing on data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Findings revealed that black, Hispanic and older women experienced more involuntary job separation in the years immediately prior to retirement, and the resulting periods of unemployment often ended up in "retirement" or labour force withdrawal. Minority disadvantage in human capital, health, and employment characteristics accounted for a large part of racial and ethnic differences in labour force withdrawal. Nevertheless, black men and Hispanic women experienced more involuntary labour market exits than white persons with similar socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. (AKM).
