AnnotationPsychotropic medication continues to be commonly used for non-therapeutic, behaviour management purposes. This paper describes reasons for excessive use of psychotropics in nursing homes and strategies for reducing consumption, focusing on simple tactics that can be used to confront the challenges that arise in every day nursing home settings. Attempts to reduce medication require cooperation by physicians, nursing and support staff, administrators, family members, and sometimes residents themselves. Contextual obstacles that hamper efforts to reduce consumption are described, and simple and effective remedies are suggested. (AKM).
