AnnotationThis bulletin focuses on available information about problem drug and alcohol use in London. Sources such as the Thames Drugs Misuse Database (DMD, the regional database covering London) cannot give a complete picture of the problem, as it can only include those people seeking treatment. The Office of Population Censuses and Surveys' (OPCS) "The prevalence of psychiatric morbidity among adults living in private households" (HMSO, 1995) looked at both drug and alcohol dependency. Other sources are suggested: the General Household Survey - GHS (for alcohol consumption), and the British Crime Survey - BCS (for self-reporting drug use). While statistics presented on drug abuse indicate a young people's problem, drug and alcohol issues are relevant for older age groups, in particular rough sleepers and homeless, and minority ethnic groups. By considering data from a range of sources, it is possible to identify some pointers for future service development. (RH).
