AnnotationThe findings from a cross-sectional national survey of the elderly population of Saudi Arabia, conducted between January 1994 and December 1995, are described in this article. The participants' physical, mental, social, and environmental health status were assessed in personal interviews. Data on 6,139 participants were analysed: 64.2% were men with a mean age of 69.2 years which was higher than women's mean age of 68 years. Of the participants, 46.7% were widows, 4.1% were widowers, and 9.3% had never been married. The majority of both men and women were illiterate. The proportion of participants with definite psychopathology was 33.8% and this increased with age and was higher among women. Overall, 18.8% were dependent on others for activities of daily living (ADLs). However, the majority (72.2%) enjoyed good health. The study concluded that there is a need for a national cost-effective programme for the care of older people. (AKM).
