AnnotationWhere does the geriatrician look for guidance and support on aspects of practice such as ethics and law? The British Geriatrics Society (BGS), founded in 1947 as the Medical Society for the Care of the Elderly, has contributed to important ethical debates, including responding to the House of Lords Committee on Ethics in 1993. The British Medical Association (BMA) has published "Advance statements about medical treatment", and "Withholding and withdrawing life-prolonging medical treatment". An issue still outstanding concerns medical consent for those suffering medical incapacity. This article outlines work by the Law Commission and the Lord Chancellor's Department leading to the Government's latest proposals for legislation. "Making decisions" published in October 1999 is a statement of intent to legislate for decision-making on behalf of medically incapacitated adults but without a timetable for doing so. It is also a statement not to legislate on three issues: advance statements about health care; independent supervision of medical research; and public law protection for people at risk. The author outlines the content of "Making decisions". (RH).
