Annotation | Identifying who is the client is rarely straightforward. This article illustrates several realms in which identifying "the client" of health and social service providers may be problematic in the light of real and potential conflicts of interests - financial, technological, psychological, and legal - among older people, providers, families and friends, and various other third parties. Respective rights and obligations flowing out of provider/client relationships are examined in the context of assessments of decision-making capacity, guardianship for the benefit of others, family caregiving arrangements, genetic testing for Alzheimer's disease (AD), research participation, and case management.
