AnnotationThis report marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment in 1990 of the Carnegie Inquiry into the Third Age, an investigation into the constraints and opportunities facing active older people. It reviews the Trust's work and its task of putting the third age on the public, governmental and organisational agendas at national and local levels. From 1993 to 1996, Employment, retirement income, and education and training, the main areas of work from 1993 to 1996, are outlined. Latterly, third age work has included involvement in Better Government for Older People (BGOP), the Active Ageing project of the Cabinet Office Performance and Innovation Unit (PIU), the Inter-Ministerial Group on Older People, New Deal 50plus, volunteering, and equal rights and age. The report expresses concern that it has failed so far to deal adequately with age discrimination. However, there is evidence that the Trust's role of communication with the media is ensuring that third age issues are on the public policy agenda. (RH).
