Annotation | London continues to have the highest number of diagnosed HIV infected individuals in Britain; this paper provides the most recently available data (1998). It breaks down data by health authority and by probable transmission route, age group and ethnic group where appropriate. It highlights areas of London where the increasing numbers of HIV infection give cause for concern and where a more sustained prevention strategy is needed. While new cases continue to occur mostly in younger age groups, the increased uptake of treatment for HIV is leading to increased life expectancy: the 55+ age group accounts for some 4% of cases in Greater London. This has implications not only for health and social services, but also for residential and nursing care homes as those with HIV reach old age. (RH). |
