AnnotationIn December 1999, the Department of Health (DoH) issued "Regulating private and voluntary healthcare: the way forward", which summarised responses to the consultation document "Regulating private and voluntary healthcare". The Care Standards Bill, currently going through the House of Lords, is to provide the statutory framework for the regulation of private and voluntary health care, as well as care homes and domiciliary care for older people. This paper expands on the December 1999 version, outlining in more detail the Department's thoughts on regulation of independent healthcare by the proposed new regulatory body, the National Care Standards Commission (NCSC). It also outlines how complaints about private healthcare might be tackled, and the relationship between the NCSC and the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI). Further consultation with the private and voluntary healthcare sector is anticipated in the next 12 months. (RH).
