AnnotationGeriatrics is not a popular choice for graduates of internal medicine or general practice. This study investigates factors influencing the decision of a primary care physician to enrol in a US fellowship course. A questionnaire was sent to all 1,011 practising primary care physicians in Arizona; 737 were returned (response rate 72.9%). Of these respondents, 242 (32.8%) stated they would consider entering a geriatric fellowship. The likelihood of entering a fellowship is strongly influenced by the duration of the fellowship: 81.8% gave this as a factor affecting any decision. In general, the increased age of respondents increased the possibility of considering a fellowship in geriatrics; thus, attempts to recruit future geriatricians from younger physicians is likely to meet with limited success.
