AnnotationUrogenital complaints are common in older women, and there is evidence that the prevalence of symptoms increases with increasing age. In this study, the prevalence of urinary tract infections (UTI), urinary incontinence (UI), oestrogen use, and overall mortality in a cohort of 434 older women in Gothenburg, Sweden, who had been treated for UTI in 1985-86 was reassessed 10 years later. Findings showed that 61% had received treatment for UTI at least once during the last 9 years. The prevalence of UI had increased from 30% in 1986 to 33% in 1995. Mortality in women with a history of UTI was higher than in the age-matched control group. In all, 45% had received oestrogen therapy at some time after the age of 60 years, and 39% reported that they were currently taking low potency oestrogens. (AKM).
