AnnotationMemory impairment is typically the earliest manifestation of dementia of the Alzheimer type (AD) and an early manifestation of some other dementias. This paper reviews research on interventions designed to help with memory functioning in early dementia: compensatory strategies; building on preserved aspects of memory; and facilitating remaining explicit memory functioning. The conceptual basis and theoretical rationale for such interventions is outlined, followed by an overview of the therapeutic approaches and evidence for effectiveness. The author stresses that any approach must be applied in a way that takes account of the whole person and his or her emotional well-being. (RH).
